The purpose of the robot is to navigate in an unknown environment starting form an unknown location to build the map of the area while it can compute its own location at the same time. Only infrared sensors are used on the vehicle to determine the distance of surrounding objects and to choose the path to follow. RF modules are used to communicate with the computer generating control signals. In literature, the algorithms developed to give these abilities to the robots are referred as SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Map Building) algorithms.
